TCIS LEARNING COMMONS

Setting Description

The Taejon Christian International School (TCIS) Learning Commons (LC) supports the K-12 student, faculty, and staff population of TCIS. TCIS is a not-for-profit, Christian, boarding school located in Daejeon, South Korea, fully accredited by WASC and is an IB World School. Enrollment fluctuates between 450 and 490 students. Twenty-five different nationalities are represented among the student body, though 75% are ethnically Korean. English is the lingua franca.

The Secondary Division LC is located on the second and third floors of the academic building. The second floor houses the collection, a reading area, an enclosed classroom, and an enclosed green-screen room. The third floor has an open layout, with large tables to facilitate group work. It also has two storerooms for school textbooks and an office space for cataloguing. A librarian staffs the second floor and a library aide staffs the third floor. Both floors have computers set aside for printing and using some single-user subscription software (eg. the Adobe suite); TCIS is a 1:1 laptop school, so students do not need to access the LC computers for everyday school work.

The LC is open throughout the day for students released from class to print, find a book, or ask the librarian a question. The LC is also well frequented by students during the loosely structured Day 4 and Day 6 Collaboration time, and every J Block. It is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm during the school week.

Collection Description

The TCIS LC collection serves both the informational and pleasure reading needs of its patrons. While the fiction section has books that are older, each year newly published books are purchased. The nonfiction section seeks to serve the curricular needs of the school.

The LC collection is divided into three main parts: nonfiction, fiction, and professional resources. There are just over 7,500 nonfiction copies, just under 5,000 fiction copies, just under 500 non-English titles for mother tongue support, and just over 1,500 professional resources. There is also a sparse collection of DVDs, CDs, and Playaway audiobooks.

The digital collection includes subscriptions to:
  • EBSCO
  • JSTOR
  • BrainPOP
  • WorldBook Encyclopedia Online
  • OverDrive
