of the Extended Essay

The Who completes the Extended Essay?
Students who are full DP students at TCIS are required to complete an Extended Essay. 

What is the Extended Essay?
The Extended Essay is an intense self lead research report. It is expected to be 4,000 words long on a topic related to a subject area the student undertakes in a DP course. 

When do students complete the Extended Essay?
Beginning in grade 11, students are expected to complete the Extended Essay on their own time. There are specific deadlines that students have to meet throughout years 1 and 2 (grades 11 and 12) of the DP program. Students are also expected to meet with their assigned supervisors at least three times total.

Where do students complete the Extended Essay?
There is no course directly related to Extended Essay, which is why this is a self lead study. 

Why complete the Extended Essay?
By completing the Extended Essay, students will gain a vast understanding of how to write a research paper. The research completed throughout this time frame will give the students extra knowledge in the subject area that they choose to pursue their Extended Essay.

How do I complete the Extended Essay?
​The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word research essay with a works cited attached. One of the criteria is that the student must meet with his or her supervisor three times and fill in a Planning and Progress Form for each of these meetings. The final meeting is known as the Viva Voce and is completed after the essay has been submitted. Once the student finishes his or her Viva Voce, the Extended Essay is complete.
